Synopsis of play:
DEAD END portrays the relationship between two survivors of a zombie apocalypse as they near their inevitable death when they become trapped at the end of a narrow hallway, with a single zombie blocking the exit. With the zombie slowly nearing, they contemplate survival, fear, humanness, and their relationship with each other. Suspenseful and darkly comedic, DEAD END follows in the tradition of playwrights such as Martin McDonagh and David Ives, and is unique in its use of narrow staging and single setting to convey the feeling of claustrophobia and impending doom.
This audition is for the role of the ZOMBIE. This is a non-speaking, lead role in a three-character play. The ZOMBIE is onstage the entire play, is the central focus of the other two leads and drives the events of the play. Traditional and non-traditional interpretations of the ZOMBIE physicality are highly encouraged/sought. Strong movement background is considered an important asset. Actors, Dancers, Physical Theatre Practitioners, Contortionists, Puppeteers and generally ‘great movers’ are encouraged to apply. There is no limit on what you can propose as your interpretation of what this character could be.
Ethno-cultural mandate or ethno-cultural casting statement:
Inclusivity, diversity, and non-traditional casting are central to our work and we’ll be casting this production to reflect the Toronto audience. Performers of all ethnic backgrounds, genders, and ability are encouraged to apply.
