Art Starts creates vibrant Toronto neighbourhoods through community-building arts initiatives. We inspire long-term social change by using the arts to engage residents, collectively work to overcome challenges and create a shared sense of identity. Our collaborative approach to art-making celebrates communities, nurtures resiliency, cultivates life skills and inspires personal growth. Established in 1992, Art Starts is recognized as one of Toronto’s leading community arts organizations. The Toronto Arts Foundation recognized Art Starts with its 2013 Arts for Youth Award.

We are currently working in collaboration with five Toronto neighbourhoods: Eglinton/Oakwood, Glendower, Villaways, Neptune and Lawrence Heights. In 2014 we delivered 41 programs and engaged over 1600 Toronto residents.

The Program Director position is an exciting opportunity to contribute artistic leadership to a strong organization and team – collaborating with committed people who work in partnership with Toronto’s underserved neighbourhoods. We are seeking an enthusiastic individual with a strong artistic background, a profound understanding of art-making in a community context and experience working in stressed and underserved neighbourhoods. This person will have the know-how to lead & mentor a programming team that delivers 40+ programs and projects annually and demonstrate exceptional skill in managing staff and community relationships.

Objectives of the Program Director

To envision and bring to life the artistic & programming goals of the organization in collaboration with our programming team and partner neighbourhoods
To lead and mentor Art Starts’ programming team to create engaging and responsive high quality artistic programming
To strengthen and grow Art Starts engagement within our partner neighbourhoods
To represent Art Starts’ role, mandate and impact

Position Summary: The Program Director will provide artistic direction, planning, programming and community leadership in keeping with Art Starts’ mission to create vibrant Toronto neighbourhoods through community-building arts initiatives.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Program Development & Evaluation
●Develop & implement annual and long term artistic visions for programming
●Lead the creation of engaging, high quality programming that is responsive to community needs in collaboration with the programming team
●Develop and implement evaluation mechanisms to measure the impact of our programs
●Oversee all program documentation
●Lead the artistic vision for Art Starts 25th Anniversary celebrations (October 2017)
●Support the development team with funding applications and budgeting

Human Resources
●Hire, train, inspire and supervise the programming team such that they can successfully develop and implement responsive, high quality artistic programs in their communities
●Develop and maintain an up-to-date roster of highly qualified artists
●Select and supervise student interns and volunteers
●Provide mentorship and guidance to program personnel and troubleshooting where necessary

Community Relations
●Cultivate and steward strong community and artistic partnerships
●Oversee the development of neighbourhood-based communications strategies in each of our 5 partner neighbourhoods
●Support program managers in trouble-shooting community issues as they arise
●Act as a spokesperson for the organization’s artistic purpose through occasional speaking engagements, public and social appearances

●Develop annual budgets and program plans in collaboration with the executive director and director of development
●Ensure administrative protocol is followed for each program (contracts, budget compliance, statistics & reports)
●Maintain an exceptionally high standard of program reporting
●Oversee the migration of all programming records into the Art Starts database

●2+ years in a program director/artistic director role
●3-5 years experience in not-for-profit arts or community organization, or equivalent training & experience
●2+ years experience managing a team of staff
●superior communication, project management, and organizational skills
●familiarity with community-engaged arts sector in Toronto and profound understanding of art-making in a community context
●strong understanding of the issues faced by underserved Toronto neighbourhoods, in particular the issues faced by residents living in Toronto Community Housing
●demonstrated commitment to working collaboratively
●post-secondary education in a related field
●must be available for some evening and weekend work
●access to a vehicle is an asset
