The Toronto Fringe Festival

With 27 different venues and 1200+ artists, the Fringe is Toronto’s largest theatre festival. In 2010 it will be host to over 150 theatre companies from Toronto and around the globe. Productions range from dramas to musical extravaganzas to improv and take place in local theatres as well as in unusual spots: playgrounds, parking lots and more. FringeKids! hosts plays exclusively for children and families. This year, the Fringe’s 22nd, is an especially exciting one as the Fringe launches a new central hub (The NEW Fringe Club) made possible by a dynamic partnership with Mirvish Enterprises and the Randolph Centre for the Arts. The improved and newly located Fringe Club will include a beer tent, extended patio, two outdoor stages and free nightly Cabarets, daily seminars and free classes.

Since 2008 The Toronto Fringe Festival has expanded it’s year-round operations to become “The Toronto Fringe”, encompassing the Fringe Festival, The Next Stage Festival and a series of both artist and youth outreach programs. The Next Stage Theatre Festival is designed to be the next step for any artist who has previously produced a show at a Canadian Association of Fringe Festival member festival. This smaller juried event aims to bridge the gap between fringe festivals and established theatres. Now gearing up for a fourth year, the NSTF has carved out its place in the landscape of Toronto theatre, garnering critical acclaim and establishing itself as a strong resource for independent artists looking to present their work to a wider audience.

The Evolution Fund is a program that was created to further the Fringe’s role as a cornerstone for independent theatre artists in Canada. It is no-strings-attached funding designed to encourage independent companies to take the next step in self-production.

Fringe Charrettes are a series of collaborative, conversation-starter conferences designed to address important issues facing independent theatre artists in Toronto. These sessions involve the coming together of different artistic minds from across the city to develop action-based solutions to some of the major issues that face our independent theatre community.
