The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA) became law on June 13, 2005. Under this landmark legislation, the government of Ontario is developing mandatory accessibility standards that will identify, remove and prevent barriers for people with disabilities in key areas of daily living. The standards will apply to private, public sector and nonprofits organizations across Ontario.
To help all TAPA Members better understand and adhere to the new AODA standards we have partnered with Accessibility Ontario to offer two new workshops in late April and early May listed below.

Customer Service Staff Training – Delivering Quality Service to Everyone

This two-hour experiential workshop will meet your organization’s training requirement under the Accessible Customer Service Standard of the AODA. It is ideal for front line staff, department heads, board members and other volunteers. This workshop includes an overview of the legislation and its requirements, disability terms and definitions, and tips on ways to provide accessible customer service to people with various disabilities. Interactive learning experiences will help your staff and volunteers to identify and remove barriers in the workplace.

Customer Service Standard: Train the Trainer – Ready to Go!
PLEASE NOTE: This workshop has been postponed
Please note: This workshop has a maximum of 5 participants
This intensive half-day workshop will be of interest to clients with a large employee base who want to lead internal training efforts themselves. One of your own staff will be trained to train new staff, volunteers, or contractors on the Accessible Customer Service Standard requirements. Workshop participants will learn the customer service legislation, disability types, effective customer service, and compliance requirements around policies, procedures and training.
Participants must have an understanding of the AODA, knowledge of disability issues, and have prior experience leading training sessions.
This workshop includes a Training Binder with activities, checklists, copies of the legislation and regulations, program materials for a 2-hour staff training session, and a certificate. A completed certificate will enable participants to train staff, volunteers, and contractors at their facilities only.
This workshop includes one hour of free follow up telephone coaching.

About your Instructor, Constance Exley
Accessibility Ontario’s lead facilitator is Constance Exley and she has led sold-‐out workshops and webinars to over 1,200 organizations. In a partnership between ONN and the Ministry of Community and Social Service, Constance designed, coordinated and delivered the EnAbling Nonprofits Ontario (ENO) project. ENO was a two-year provincial
education and outreach initiative focused on nonprofits and their obligations under the
Accessible Customer Service Standard of the AODA.
Constance has more than 25 years experience in the nonprofit sector in Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia, and overseas. She has worked in a variety of sub-‐sectors including social services, international development, housing, environment, arts and culture, sports and recreation.
Constance holds a teaching degree from McGill University and a Masters of Environmental Studies and Urban Planning from York University.
Working in Schools and Communities: Making Cross-Curricular Connections

As artists and companies explore multi-disciplinary work and integrate new forms and styles into their work, so too is the work for young audiences changing. Educators and schools are looking for work for young audiences that can dynamically excite them about many subjects and disciplines. What is this notion of “cross-curricular focus” and how does it effect, inspire and inform the creation and implementation of work for young audiences?
If your work is targeted for young audiences and/or you are interested in working in schools, join us for an informal discussion that will provide insights into working in schools and communities.

Workshop #1 – The AODA and Customer Service Staff
This training workshop is for all staff and volunteers responsible for implementing the AODA and Customer Service Standard in
their organization. The workshop includes an overview of the legislation and its requirements, reporting and training requirements, as well as interactive learning experiences to help participants to identify and remove barriers in their workplace.
Workshop #2 – The Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation
The Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation (IASR) sets out the requirements for three new standards:
- Information and Communications
- Employment
- Transportation
This regulation includes many specific requirements as well as general ones for the creation of accessibility policies/plans and training of staff and volunteers. Participants will come away with a good understanding of the IASR, what their organizations needs to do to be compliant, information on their upcoming compliance deadlines, and next steps for organizational readiness.

About your Instructor, Slade Lander
Slade Lander is the Arts Manager for Public Recordings Project and has been in that position since 2007.
Mr. Lander was an Arts Manager at Dance Umbrella of Ontario from June, 2006 to April, 2012. He worked with between seven and ten clients at a time, performing strategic planning, grant application preparation, financial planning, and financial management. He also liaised with funding councils’ officers. The clients spanned a wide range of dance and organizational forms. In 2012, his clients were Anandam Dancetheatre Productions, Tom Brouillette, Allison Cummings, Little Pear Garden Collective, Lucy Rupert, Public Recordings Performance Projects, Zata Omm Dance Projects.
Mr. Lander also assisted organizations in incorporating as a not-for-profit and registering as a charity. He has taught workshops on the topic for the Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts.

Intro To Photoshop

Granting 101: The Basics
This workshop is offered in partnership with the Ontario Arts Council and the Toronto Arts Council
Pat Bradley, Theatre Officer at the Ontario Arts Council, will share information, perspective, and tips about project grants, particularly the OAC’s three professional theatre project programs – Theatre Projects, Playwright Residency, and Theatre Creators’ Reserve.
Michael Du Maresq, Associate Theatre Officer at the Toronto Arts Council, will talk about various projects the TAC Theatre Program funds, eligibility, grant-writing tips, writing project descriptions, effective support material, and creating budgets.

You know you need your Board but you aren’t quite sure how to make the most out of the relationship. This workshop will explore various kinds of Boards; Board responsibilities (the ‘must do’s’ and the ‘optional’); the difference between Board and staff roles; best practices in terms of structure, officers, committees and task forces; acquiring and motivating volunteer board members; and more. There will be an opportunity for Q&A following the presentation.
Presenter: Diane Davy is the Executive Director of WorkInCulture, a non-profit arts service organization that focuses on business skills training and lifelong career development for people working in the arts and culture sector. Davy also has her own consulting firm, Castledale Inc. that specializes in the business of culture.
