The Dumb Waiter by Harold Pinter centres around the characters of Ben and Gus who are holed up in an abandoned basement with a job to do. The play is tense, claustrophobic, funny and surreal. It ask the questions- how do we cope when the structures we have worked within all our lives break down? How do you leave a situation that there seems to be no exit from? How do we live within the decisions we make?
A drama of anxiety the play moves between the comic grotesque to the terrifying grotesque. The Dumb Waiter is early Pinter and plays delicately with the balance of Theatre of The Absurd within a Naturalistic structure.
