Nightswimming is delighted to announce the fifth and final commission in our 5x25 initiative. We’re proud to welcome Vancouver-based actor and theatre maker Heidi Damayo to Nightswimming and to commission her project Angels Unawares.
For each of the past 5 years we’ve requested proposals for a new work from artists born in 1995, the year of Nightswimming’s first production. Every year we’ve had the opportunity to meet remarkable artists like Heidi as they are finishing their training and forging their pathways as performance creators.
Heidi is a multidisciplinary theatre artist and queer, hapa prairie girl from Calgary, Alberta. Her playwriting credits include Morning Glory (LEAP at The Arts Club), LIVE (LEAP and Ignite Youth Festival), and Home Fires Burning (UBC Centennial Celebration). Acting credits include Mustard (Arts Club/Belfry Theatre) and New Canadian Kid (Green Thumb).
In Angels Unawares, seventeen-year-old Faith has a penchant for violence and a habit of picking fights. When her guardian angel oversteps his bounds to defend her, all hell breaks loose – literally – and they find themselves in the midst of a new war in heaven. Angels Unawares uses epic stage fights and ensemble movement to bring badass women centre stage and questions how far is too far when it comes to protecting the people we love.
Nightswimming established 5x25 to celebrate the five years between our 20th and 25th seasons and engage with a new generation of artists. In 2020/21, we will showcase these artists and the works they are creating as we mark our 25th year of commissioning new works. Stay tuned for details later this year about 5x25 events as we look to the future of theatre creation in Canada.
