Nightswimming Producer Brittany Ryan will be stepping down from her position at the end of July 2021. During her five years as Nightswimming's producer, Brittany has evolved and inspired the company's artistic practice, achieved a remarkable track record for developing and touring new works, and contributed enormously to the national theatre community.

“I consider my time at Nightswimming supporting storytellers and creative projects to be one of my greatest gifts. It has truly been an honour to collaborate with so many thoughtful and generous creators, performers, designers, stage managers, technicians and administrators over the last 5 years. Above all, I will deeply miss my partnership with Artistic Director Brian Quirt. Thank you to Brian and the Board of Directors, especially Heather McMartin, for guiding the company and supporting me all the way through. I will miss you all.” – Brittany

In just three years before the pandemic put our activities on hold, Brittany produced four national tours with a total of 26 runs: Carmen Aguirre’s Broken Tailbone (including our first US run in Los Angeles), Anita Majumdar’s The Fish Eyes Trilogy, and two shows co-created by artistic director Brian Quirt – These are the Songs That I Sing When I’m Sad (with Jane Miller) and Why We Are Here! (with Martin Julien).

As a leader in the community, Brittany has played a critical role on the Board of the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres and as a member of PACT’s team negotiating the new Canadian Theatre Agreement, enacting change and progress in how we all work together.

She’s done all of this while expanding Nightswimming’s roster of commissioned artists through our recent Call for Commission Proposals from Black and Indigenous artists; our 5x25 initiative for artists born in 1995; and making our innovative Pure Research into a national program with events in Vancouver, Calgary and Toronto.

"I will miss her fabulous energy, her positive and transformational commitment to making change happen, and her dramaturgical contributions to all of Nightswimming’s creative projects. It has been a true pleasure to collaborate so fully with Brittany since 2017. She has had huge impact on our work, and on the field. Thank you, Brittany!” – Brian

“Nightswimming has flourished under Brian and Brittany’s thoughtful and artist-focused leadership. We are so thankful to Brittany for her excellent work over the past four years. And just as Brittany brought her whole self to the role, I look forward to seeing what the new producer will bring to the company, and to the work that will be done with the incredible and innovative artists that work with us.” – Heather McMartin, Board President
