The Second City will proudly celebrate Toronto's rich array of cultures and orientations with its 6th Annual Diversity Weekend (May 4 to 6, 2019 — The Second City Training Centre). The event welcomes guests of all background to attend workshops and seminars, mingle with Second City professionals, and take in some quality live comedy.
The super-sized weekend then stretches into Monday with auditions for the Toronto Bob Curry Fellowship , whose ongoing mandate is to seek out diverse new comedic voices, and provide tuition-free training in sketch and improvisation. Past Toronto Bob Curry Fellowship recipients include Ann Pornel (22 Minutes, She The People), Brandon Hackett (Second City Mainstage), and TallBoyz2Men members Tim Blair and Franco Nguyen (whose half-hour sketch comedy series TALLBOYZ was just greenlit to series by CBC Television.
DIVERSITY WEEKEND HIGHLIGHTS
- Saturday, May 4: A meet and greet mixer (mingle and network with Second City professionals and former Bob Curry fellows), along with the "Finding Your Voice In Comedy" seminar, hosted by Second City's Director of Diversity Talent Inclusion & Development, Dionna Griffin-Irons. (4:30 to 6:30pm.) At 7pm the Second City presents a special free performance of OTHER: a diverse comedy & variety showcase hosted by Neha Kohli and Rabiya Mansoor. Check out some of Toronto’s best up-and-coming comedians and performers showcasing stand-up, sketch, solo material and much more.
- Sunday, May 5: Free sketch writing and improv audition workshops, providing hands-on practical experience for actors and performers. Space is limited.
- Monday, May 6: Toronto Bob Curry Fellowship Auditions. The Second City is awarding up to 16 tuition-free fellowships to qualified talent, to train and study in a 12-14 week master class.
