When did you first think of yourself as an artist?
I think my life has always been one of an artist but I probably didn't define it like that until I came to the city and wanted to make a living at it. I think a lot of Indigenous people are like that. For those of us who grew up in rural settings, our life is filled with creation and stories. It's a way of life. First time getting paid for doing something you love though, that was probably the moment. "Oh wow, I can support myself telling stories!" That was a cool one.
Who helped you develop your voice as an artist?
I stand on the shoulders of so many giants. My grandmothers and grandfathers, my ancestors, and my many teachers. So many have shaped me. An important teacher that I forget to mention sometimes are the trees. I was raised and shaped heavily by the northern woods of Ontario. Nature. It reminds me of why I do it. The animals. The land and all that lives on it. Nature reminds me that there is still magic in the world. That gives me a voice.
What’s something that’s inspired you this week?
The Leafs almost making a comeback last night against Chicago. The game felt like it was hopeless and then in the last half of the 3rd period, they started making a comeback. Man, it is never too late to start giving it your all, even at zero hour. Don't give up when you have gotten 3/4 of the way through. It's the last 1/4 where true character is developed. So let's do this.
