When did you first think of yourself as an artist?

Hmmm, this question is taking me way back and will most likely make me spiral into some nostalgic coma very soon.   I used to draw a lot when I was a kid and thought I would become a visual artist as well as a theatre artist so I have always been compelled to create in some way.  It was a total escape for me in every way (which I needed desperately) so I can’t remember NOT thinking I was ever an artist.  And I have loads of debt which is a requirement in being an artist is it not?

Who helped you develop your voice as an artist?

My teachers, Patti Lupone in Evita (which I listened to incessantly as a child), and a bit more recently, studying with Augusto Boal over a decade ago and working in Forum Theatre radically changed the way I approach theatre.

What’s something that’s inspired you this week?

I’m in rehearsals here for a show in Houston right now and watching the actors work so hard and with so much passion and commitment has been a real inspiration. We really do pour our hearts and souls full throttle into our work.

What’s your favourite restaurant in the city to visit?

I’m a total foodie and love eating out, but my go-to restaurant is Fushimi on Church St. whenever I’m in town. It has the most amazing all you can eat menu you can ask for (which you order on ipads), as if the walnut shrimp wasn’t enough.

What do you want to see more of on Toronto stages?

Musicals! Why are they so damn expensive to produce???!!!

Evan is currently directing Kiss of The Spider Woman at Don Jail from March 6 - 10, 2019
