Deadline: Monday, March 2nd, 2020
"be careful with each other (so you can be dangerous together)" is a poetic drama, in both prose and verse forms, about transformation as expressed across different scales and registers: as insurrectionary politics for social change, as transformative justice, as transness.
For a workshop production of this play at the 2020 Toronto Fringe Festival, directed by Sarah Kitz ("What I Call Her" at Crow's Theatre), we are casting the following lead role:
- "A" -- BIPOC (Black/Indigenous/person of colour), female or non-binary, late teens/early 20s. Variously: an insurrectionary activist who experiences racial profiling and surveillance by the police, including a member of her own family who is a cop; an accomplice to a ghastly crime, in the midst of a transformative justice process; a young person navigating coming out as not-cis with her partner, a much more conservative queer man; one of the countless many who survive underground after the border riots escalate into war.
The text leaves ambiguous to what extent this role is a single integrated character and to what extent it's four distinct ones.
We are especially interested in considering transfeminine performers, strong movers, and those with a background in performing formally intricate texts of any kind (e.g. spoken word, rap, etc).
The production will be rehearsed and staged under the CAEA Festival Policy, with performers receiving an equal share of box office profits. We have also applied for Toronto Arts Council and Ontario Arts Council project funding, which would go mostly towards supplementing artist fees.
Rehearsals will be intermittent and scheduled flexibly throughout the late spring. The 2020 Toronto Fringe runs July 1-12.
Please e-mail submissions (including headshot, resume, an introductory note, and any access needs) to firstname.lastname@example.org [carefulcollective AT gmail DOT com] by Monday, March 2nd; we'll consider late applications if we have space remaining. Selected applicants will be asked to prepare sides from the play. Deep gratitude to everyone who takes the time to apply: we'll try to see as many folks as possible.
