- Stanley Jerome- Older brother of Eugene Jerome Male, 28 -35. Neurotic, high strung, works as manager of boy's clothing at Abraham and Straus, and joins with Eugene to form a comedy writing team.
- Jack Jerome - Male, 55ish. Kate's husband, Eugene and Stanley's father. A clothier, not an affectionate man who has become a bit numb to life and by the start of the play has had an off and on again affair. Irate at his son's portrayal of the family's situation on radio, and put in his place by Stanley for his indiscretions, he leaves Kate at the end of the play.
- Ben Epstein - Male, 80ish Socialist and ardent follower of Trotsky, Kate's (mother of Stanley) father who lives with them. The brothers find him a wealth of material for their comedy.
