Omnium Gatherum by Theresa Rebeck & Alexandra Gersten-Vassilaros
Directed by Ben Hayward
A Theatre By Committee production
Believing that lively, contentious debate is the heart and soul of a dinner party, a domestic artist and perfect hostess has invited an assortment of opinionated personalities to share a surreal meal. The guests at this exquisite feast of food and argument confront the global implications of September 11th and beyond in an urgent, impassioned and hilarious work that was a finalist for the 2004 Pulitzer Prize in Drama.
We will rehearse from late-July to early-September. The production runs September 13 – 23rd at St. Luke’s United Church. This is a profit-share opportunity.
THEATRE BY COMMITTEE
Theatre By Committee is a seven-member collective of Toronto-based theatre artists creating narrative-focused, contemporary work in found spaces. Committee members are driven by an ensemble approach that rejects role-specific or hierarchical models to create a truly collaborative working environment.
*All characters are between 23 and 30 years old
- Lydia: A feminist and academic. She is concealing a pregnancy throughout the entire play and is having trouble reconciling her desire to be a mother with her ideology. Smart, aloof and focused she is the kind of person who can suck the air out of a room.
- Julia: A Christian black woman. She is a compassionate person whose middle-road view on Christianity leads her to want to save the world. She is in no way ignorant or deluded, but has reconciled a judicious belief in God with the realities of modern life.
- Khalid: A scholar of Middle Eastern culture, of Middle Eastern origin. The character is modelled after Edward Saied. Khalid is a deeply sensitive and thoughtful person who is looking for love as much as a home for his ideas.
- Mohammed: An Islamic radical who wants revenge. He is a terrorist who is convinced that he is doing God’s work.
Theatre By Committee is committed to pluralism on-stage and off-stage. We are excited to produce a show that showcases the diversity of Toronto's artists.
Please send a resume and headshot to firstname.lastname@example.org by Friday March 31 at 11:59pm. Only those selected for auditions will be contacted. Auditions will take place in early April. Please prepare a contemporary monologue and be prepared for a cold read from the script.
