The Rape of Lucrece by William Shakespeare
Directed by Karthy Chin
Produced by Laura McCallum

The Rape of Lucrece is a narrative poem that follows the rape and tragic death of Lucrece, the wife of a Roman soldier, and the revenge that follows. This modern adaptation condenses the 265-stanza poem to a 30-minute play examining the ways in which agency can be reclaimed by those who experience sexual assault.

The Rape of Lucrece will be presented as part of the Director’s Lab at the 16th Paprika Festival. It will run for two evening performances at Aki Studio between May 22nd and May 28th, 2017.

Paprika is a youth-led professional performing arts organization that runs year- round professional training and mentorship programs culminating in a festival of new work by young artists. The Director’s Lab is a streamlined program for emerging directors with the supported guidance of a mentor and a partnership organization; Karthy has been paired with Native Earth Performing Arts.

We seek six emerging artists for this collective creation. Artists with a passion for Shakespeare are encouraged to apply. Please note that this production will openly discuss and address rape, sexual assault, and violence against female-identified persons. This is an unpaid opportunity.

Please send a resume and headshot to by Saturday February 18th. Only those selected for auditions will be contacted.

Auditions will take place on Sunday February 19th between 5:00pm-9:00pm. Please prepare a 1 minute Shakespearean monologue and be prepared for a cold read from the script. If you are unavailable during this time, please notify us in your email and we will do our best to accommodate you.
