January 23, 2018. Scarborough, Ontario—Scarborough Arts is pleased to announce our new Executive Director, Derek Spooner. Derek started his role at Scarborough Arts on Monday, January 15, 2018.
Derek brings a wealth of experience in program and fund development, operational design, data analysis, and communications. As a professional in non-profit management and fundraising, he has held senior level management positions in several not-for-profit organizations, most recently at the Canadian Music Therapy Trust Fund where he served as the Executive Director starting in 2015. His fundraising portfolio includes $9.04 million in fulfilled gifts for various Canadian and international institutions including the Toronto International Film Festival, The New England Aquarium, The Boston Museum of Science, Save The Children Canada, Mirvish Theatre Productions, The Chicago Memorial Children's Hospital, and Free the Children, among others.
Derek holds an Honours Bachelor of Social Sciences in Social Justice and Peace Studies and Women's Studies, with a Minor in Film Studies, and a Master’s Degree in Women’s Studies and Feminist Research from Western University. Derek is also a painter and a writer, and has trained as an actor at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy and the New School University in New York City.

As Scarborough Arts’ new Executive Director, Derek is committed to continue building the legacy of the 40-year-old institution through collaboration and artistic community development. “I am looking forward to enhancing the organization’s ability to create public dialogues, foster healthy and connected communities, create opportunities that connect a diverse array of folks through the arts, and to continue to put Scarborough on the map as an influential and artistic hub.”
