FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

February 11, 2015…Toronto, ON… The Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts (TAPA) in partnership with Friends of the Arts will meet with a record thirty-three Toronto city councillors on Thursday February 12, 2014 to discuss the importance and impact of arts and culture in Toronto.

“This is the 5th Annual Arts Day at the City”, said TAPA’s Executive Director Jacoba Knaapen, “and this year we are looking forward to our discussions with a majority of city councillors. I am also pleased to announce the Cultural Expo as a new component to Arts Day. The Cultural Expo features 44 diverse arts organizations representing Wards from across the city. We invite Torontonians to visit and explore the Cultural Expo in the city hall Rotunda from 11:00 am – 2:00pm”.

Arts supporters, donors, artists and arts administrators will spend the 5th Annual Arts Day at the City in discussion with city councillors that will focus on the fulfillment of the commitment by city council to invest $25 per capita by 2017. With every $1 invested directly in artists and arts organizations leveraging funds from other sources, the remaining $5 million investment to be allocated by 2017 will ensure that Toronto’s arts sector attracts at least $35 million in new revenues to the city by 2017.

In addition participants will be discussing Toronto’s Arts Sector after 2017. Even at $25 per capita, Toronto’s municipal arts investment is significantly lower than that of comparable Canadian and US municipalities. Planning now for the next phase of investment will ensure our city remains competitive and continues to attract top arts and culture workers from across the country and indeed the world.

Friends of the Arts maintains that the Mayor of Toronto and all City Councillors can play a leadership role in promoting our city’s rich cultural assets for both citizens and visitors and in day-to-day decision-making at City Hall. The City of Toronto has a clear opportunity to leverage the cultural sector for the economic and social benefit of all Torontonians, elevating Toronto’s status as a highly desirable destination for tourists, new residents, and businesses alike.
