Two Nine One Letters explores the love of two of the most influential figures in early American modernist art: Georgia O’Keeffe and Alfred Stieglitz.

In 1915, after Stieglitz discovered some of O’Keeffe’s charcoal drawings - sent to him by her friend and classmate Anita Pollitzer - they began a correspondence that would last until Stieglitz’s death in 1946. Throughout those three decades they exchanged over 5,000 letters. This play is inspired by those letters.

Casting the role of ALFRED STIEGLITZ (age 25-55): Lover turned husband of Georgia O’Keeffe. Born in Hoboken, New Jersey in 1864 (schooled as an engineer in Germany). Stieglitz returned to NYC in 1890 to advocate for photography to be considered a medium of artistic merit equal to that of other art forms such as painting and sculpture. Due to his efforts he became one of the most influential and internationally acclaimed photographers in the word. In 1905 he founded the “Little Galleries of the Photo-Secession”, better known as the 291 Gallery on Fifth Avenue in New York City. There he shared the works of his contemporaries as well as introduced the works of many European artists to America, such as Paul Cezanne, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. Though his achievements were many, Alfred often described the discovery of Georgia O’Keeffe as the greatest success in his life.

Stieglitz is passionate, loving and flirtatious. He is extremely charming and generous, academic and hardworking. Stieglitz is also well known for his fiery temper, with the ability to go from 0 to 100 very quickly. He is obsessive, driven, and egotistical; at times displaying a great deal of narcissism.
