The Howland Company Reading Group is a free event held in and around the last Sunday of every month. Anyone is welcome drop by, cold-read a part in the chosen play (copies are provided and roles are assigned and switched around on the fly) and get the opportunity to meet and chat with other theatre enthusiasts and fellow weirdos.
In advance of our workshop production of the newly translated and adapted 'Casimir and Caroline' (check it out!) for this month's instalment of the Reading Group we will be looking at Ödön von Horváth's Tales from the Vienna Woods.
Written (like the original 'Casimir and Caroline') in the late 1920's as Europe struggled with the effects of the worldwide economic depression and the rising threat of Fascism, the play revolves around a cast of middle class characters living quietly desperate lives in a bucolic area on the edge of the Vienna Woods. Dark social satire, economic hardship, jilted butchers and more!
Join the Reading Group as we tackle this classic of German-language theatre. And if you like what you read, be sure to join us for 'Casimir and Caroline' !
