The Urjo Kareda Residency Grant supports the training and artistic residency of an exceptional emerging theatre artist each season at Tarragon Theatre.
This $15,000 grant is made possible by an annual donation from The Youssef-Warren Foundation and allows the successful applicant to spend up to 20 weeks at the Tarragon Theatre, working in collaboration with an artist or artists in the applicant’s chosen field of interest. The 20 weeks residency period must occur between August 2018 and June 2019 but those 20 weeks can be broken up within that period.
The grant is geared toward an emerging professional theatre artist who resides in Canada, whether it is in the field of Design, Production, Dramaturgy, Playwriting, Directing or Artistic Direction. In the context of this theatre award “emerging artist” is defined as an artist of any age who has spent no fewer than two years and no more than seven in their chosen field (after training, if applicable), and who has demonstrated a strong aptitude for working in theatre. Mid-career artist who are transitioning their focus are also encouraged to apply. The applicant must have created or participated in at least two artistic works within their focus, that have been presented, produced, or published.
The applicant must be/become a resident in the Greater Toronto Area for the duration of the proposed program (travel stipend is available). Applications are encouraged from artists of diverse cultures & abilities and artists working in non-traditional forms of theatre.
Applicants are invited to explain how a residency would benefit not only the artist but also the host theatre. The applicant should therefore be well informed of the kind of work Tarragon does and be able to show why Tarragon Theatre is the best place for their project.
