Monday November 26th @ 7:00PM
In a cramped apartment in the Bronx several generations of the Berger family struggle to live alongside each other and their boarder Sam (a recent immigrant to America), in the midst of The Great Depression. Written and set in 1933, "Awake and Sing!" was one of Clifford Odets earliest plays and has many elements of a classic "kitchen-sink" family drama. We're curious to see what resonance some elements of this play might hold for Toronto in 2018 - the fears of gaining/maintaining a foothold in an increasingly crowded, competitive and desperate city and the conflict that brings to the idealism and hopes of a younger generation.
The Howland Company Reading Group is a free event held on the last Monday of every month. Anyone is welcome to drop by, cold-read a part in the chosen play (copies are provided and roles are assigned and switched around on the fly) and get the opportunity to engage in discussion, and meet people in the community!
Once again we will be hosting this Reading Group at the Gladstone Hotel! On Monday November 26th @ 7:00PM we will meet at the back of the Melody Bar - grab a drink, get some food, meet some people, read a play!
