A big-little play about faith in America—and the trouble with changing your mind.”
This month we look forward to reading “The Christians” by the prolific young American playwright Lucas Hnath. It premiered at the Humana Theatre Festival in Louisville Kentucky, heart of the midwestern Bible Belt, and is a rare example of an American play that explores the complexities and tensions within contemporary Christian culture. Hnath drew on aspects of his own life, growing up a member of an evangelical congregation in Orlando. His other work is produced frequently across Canada, the UK and United States: “A Doll’s House, Part 2“ having just received a production at the Panasonic Theatre featuring Kate Hennig and Deb Hay, and his newest play “Hillary and Clinton“ currently running in New York with Laurie Metcalf and John Lithgow.
The Howland Company Reading Group is a free event held on the last Monday of every month. Anyone is welcome to drop by, cold-read a part in the chosen play (copies are provided and roles are assigned and switched around on the fly) and get the opportunity to engage in discussion, and meet people in the community.
On Monday, April 29th @ 7:00PM we will be setting up shop at the back of the Gladstone Hotel’s Melody Bar - show up early and grab a drink or some food before we begin!
