3 Actors. 3 Stories. 3 Centuries.
Madeleine George's intricately designed 'The (Curious Case of the) Watson Intelligence' was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 2014 and considers the development of technology and its intersection with human relationships over three different periods of time. 2012: After leaving her husband, Merrick, Eliza is trying to find happiness with a new partner, Watson (an exquisitely life-like robot). 1885: Dr. Watson (of Sherlock Holmes fame) is engaged to spy on Merrick (in this period, a wealthy, Victorian industrialist) by his suspicious wife Eliza. 1931: Thomas Watson, (assistant to Alexander Graham Bell) is being interviewed by radio producer, Eliza, about his contribution to the development of the telephone. This wild and boldly imaginative play flew under the radar when it first premiered, so we're excited to give it a read now.
The Howland Company Reading Group is a free event held in the last week of every month. Anyone is welcome to drop by, cold-read a part in the chosen play (copies are provided and roles are assigned and switched around on the fly) and get the opportunity to engage in discussion, and meet people in the community.
We're super excited to be presenting this month's Reading Group in partnership with the Gladstone Hotel! Come on down and join us at the bar on Monday 27th @ 7:00PM.
