A Watershed Moment: Transitioning to Gender-Neutral Performance Awards

In April 2018, the Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts declared that their flagship program, the Dora Mavor Moore Awards, would present fully gender neutral performance categories beginning with the June 2019 ceremony. In this article, TAPA staff detail institutional background history, outline the consultation and discussion processes leading to this policy change and present an examination of why this change is important now and the implications or ripple effects such a policy has internally and in the broader performing arts community.
