Fresh Palette is delighted to announce a casting call for their upcoming production of Painting By Numbers, a new play by Judah Parris.

Fresh Palette is a new theatre company that hopes to create opportunities for emerging artists. We believe that everyone has a unique palette, colours that represent themselves, their culture, and their experiences and we aim to work with theater creators to create shows that highlight each individual’s palette.

Our current project is the premiere of Judah Parris’s play Painting By Numbers at the 2024 Toronto Fringe Festival. Painting By Numbers is a new, ridiculous, comedy of errors “framed” around the lost masterpiece of Vincent Van Gogh. We are hoping to find actors excited to bring this show to life!

Leila Fitzgerald A snarky woman who’s apathetic towards the past. She wears many hats in life and is a master at code switching. Works a 9-5 office job. Moonlights as a mistress. Black or mixed race artists are particularly encouraged to apply!

Wilfred Manchester III An heir to an aristocratic line. He’s a mogul and art collector. Very self important and ambitious. Has a sense of integrity that clashes with his greed. Leila’s lover. Married & a father of two.

Vanessa Dubois / Marjorie Manchester*:

  • Vanessa Dubois – An ambitious unrecognized artist with fire in her heart and a chip on her shoulder. Leila’s best friend.
  • Marjorie Manchester – Wilfred’s wife and mother of two. She prioritizes the family’s reputation. Blunt and to the point. Strained relationship with her husband.

Ciara / Nelly Stars* –

  • Ciara – The butler of the Manchester family. Born in a poor town in the US but received formal certification in England. Hides her background from her employers. Cut from the same cloth as Leila.
  • Nelly Stars – A rookie reporter who has an interest in cases of art theft happening in the city. Nerdy and awkward but passionate. Played by the same actor as Ciara.

*These are separate characters played by the same actor.

In accordance with the conditions of Fringe’s two phase lottery and in the interest of representation, priority will be given to Black, Indigenous and POC actors, though we strongly encourage submissions from all, regardless of ethnic background.
