Ontario Culture Days

Contract: March 1 – December 16, 2022

Terms: 32-35 hours/week, $23-25/hour; Health Benefits Allowance & Employee Assistance Plan

About the role

Reporting to the Network and Programs Director, this role is responsible for supporting outreach and cultural tourism in Northern Ontario, with a focus on the annual Ontario Culture Days fall festival, and the ON Culture Guide travel itineraries. It also contributes to outreach and partnership development to best foster and support ONCD’s ongoing work in Northern Ontario and across the province. An ideal candidate for this role would be someone passionate about developing relationships across sectors, while promoting the breadth of Northern Ontario arts and culture engagement opportunities to the wider province.

This role is responsible for:

Network & Partnerships

  • Support outreach and organizer communications for the fall Ontario Culture Days festival
  • Development of a minimum of three “ON Culture Guides” in Northern Ontario destinations, designed for bolstering tourism and highlighting arts & culture in the region
  • Build relationships with arts, culture and tourism organisations, and local businesses, in support of the ON Culture Guide program, the Ontario Culture Days festival, and the annual ON Culture Days tourism symposium
  • Contribute to the production of professional development opportunities to best serve our network; focus on cultural tourism, equity and inclusion
  • Develop a Northern Ontario network and outreach strategy

Festival Coordination

  • Support the roll out of the new Regional Hub program to select destinations in Northern Ontario
  • Support hyper-local tourism in Northern Ontario during the 2022 fall festival, including the creation of content for the new Regional Hub program
  • On-the-ground coordination of festival support, including distribution of marketing materials, swag, etc.
  • Working with the rest of the Programming team, support of ONCD programming efforts in Northern Ontario

Marketing & Communications

  • Create, edit and implement content to be presented on our social media channels, particularly as it relates to relevant ON Culture Guides, Regional Hubs, and Northern destinations.
  • In support of other colleagues, assist in the creation, editing and implementation of content on our websites, e-newsletters and other marketing and communication materials
  • Support the translation of existing English content into French on ONCD’s website
  • Assisting with marketing efforts to promote Northern Ontario to the rest of the province including creation of a Cultural Tourism Marketing Plan for our work in Northern Ontario

Generally, as relevant to your areas of work:

  • Updating of website sections/pages
  • Contributing to stakeholder/funder/boards reports
  • Contributing to proposal and grant development

  • Understand that tasks outside of those outlined may arise. Working with the small ONCD team, this role requires flexibility and responsiveness to additional duties as assigned.

Our ideal candidate:

  • Has approximately 1-2 years experience working in arts, culture or tourism, and a background in program coordination, arts and culture outreach and/or marketing and communications
  • Is motivated by connecting the public with meaningful arts and culture experiences in their communities
  • Is dedicated to advancing principals of equity and accessibility in the arts and culture sector, and beyond
  • Is able to communicate clearly and effectively
  • Seeks to inspire their colleagues with knowledge, skills, and energy

  • Supports a culture that actively raises the bar within Ontario Culture Days and beyond; Proactively establishes and maintains positive and effective working team relationships

  • Understands and enforces all company policies and procedures
  • Is Bilingual, French and English (strong preference)
  • Is based in Northern Ontario and its communities

Requirements

  • Post-secondary degree in a related field (Arts, Museum Studies, Community Development, Writing, Social Media, Marketing etc.)
  • Must meet eligibility requirements of grant funding supporting this role:
    • be aged 30 and under
    • have graduated within the last three years with a degree, diploma or certificate from a recognized post-secondary institution;
    • Based in Northern Ontario
  • A solid understanding – or comfort level with quickly learning – WordPress, Adobe CreativeSuite, Canva, MailChimp, Buffer etc.
  • Experience in sound and video editing is an asset.
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Legally eligible to work in Canada

Location & Travel

This is a remote work position. Preference will be given to candidates living in Northern Ontario. Some travel within and outside of Northern Ontario will be a component of this role.

About Ontario Culture Days

Ontario Culture Days fosters public engagement with a vibrant Ontario arts, culture, and heritage sector. We produce year-round content, lead a province-wide festival, and support a wide network of organizers through communications, marketing, outreach and artistic programs. We participate in the national Culture Days festivities, starting the last Friday of each September. In 2019, the Ontario Culture Days Festival had 1,500 events registered in over 130 Ontario municipalities, and over 750,000 Ontarians attended. In 2020, despite the pandemic, the festival was expanded to four weeks, and included more than 1,000 events (mostly online) in 70 municipalities, with attendance exceeding 1 million Ontarians. Programs included digital, self-guided, and in-person events with safety precautions in place.

In 2019, ONCD expanded its brand and its year-round scope to include Ontario’s tourism sector through the launch of oncultureguides.ca. The website provides unique insights through local arts and culture stories found throughout the province, things to do, and a growing roster of cultural travel guides.
