In this course, writers will develop the tools, techniques and elements they need to make the central characters of their scripts truly specific and idiosyncratic. Through character-based writing exercises and monologue creation, the rhythm, voice and expressions of your character will be defined. Then through dialogue and scene structure, contrasting multiple different characters’ voices will be explored. An undercurrent through our work will be to strengthen a process of identity-conscious writing (embracing awareness of race, gender and class within your characters and not shying away from those realities in your storytelling). This course will equip you with a practice of distinguishing authentic voices in your writing by guiding you to dig under the skin of your characters.
