The Life and Death of Ana Petrovna by Hannah Rittner is a full-length play in process.

We are going to be doing a workshop of the entire play and presenting a reading of ACT ONE in the middle of August. The play has been developed through the Stratford Playwright's Retreat and Nightwood Theatre's Write from the Hip Program. Together, Hannah and director Christine Brubaker are working on a full-length, 2 act play, that asks large questions about women, sexuality, society and the male gaze. Our primary goal before soliciting productions is to first and foremost, create a masterful, evocative, and resilient script.

Set in the lobby of the Moscow Theatre during Sarah Bernhardt’s 1899 tour of Hamlet, The Life and Death of Ana Petrovna follows Ana, a young woman from the outskirts of Moscow as she confronts the truth about Sarah Bernhardt’s affair with her husband. What initially seems to be a tête-à-tête over a man quickly transforms when Ana confesses she stole the romantic letter correspondence Sarah started with her husband, penning all the letters to Sarah in her husband’s name — finally leading to a fantastical proposal. Aware that she cannot continue this lie any longer, she tries to court Sarah before her body succumbs to TB. After the truth is revealed these two women must decide what can be done. Can fantasy translate to reality? What part of themselves did they really share? And how much does Sarah owe to this dying woman? Both women tremble through the darkness of the truth — Ana, using the lobby piano when she is at a loss for words, and Sarah clinging to the fragile bravado of the theatre to keep her afloat. The Life and Death of Ana Petrovna is a love-letter to the under-written character, Ana Petrovna from Chekhov’s Ivanov. While doing so, it interrogates whether the written word has the power to transform our expectations of love, sexuality, and death.

The Development Coordinator will be responsible for fundraising efforts to break even and donor liaison. Currently all roles are unpaid, but the goal of the fundraising period is to fairly pay all team members. The Development Coordinator will:

  • Find and reach out to potential donors
  • Manage a crowd funding campaign
  • Work with the Producer to coordinate a fundraising event
  • Be the liaison with theatre companies and donors who come to view the work
