Organization Description

Volcano/Peggy Baker Dance Projects

Volcano is an international award-winning theatre company based in Toronto. Using innovations in global and intercultural performance practice, Volcano creates theatre that is stylistically and socially modern, a theatre that explores identity, politics, and history. Volcano is both cosmopolitan and uniquely Canadian, bringing this country the latest in international theatre trends while touring Canadian artists and works around the world. Led by Artistic Director Ross Manson, Volcano has been a vital contributor to the independent theatre scene since 1994, and continues to question what it means to be a purveyor of outward-looking, rigorous Canadian performance.

Peggy Baker Dance Projects is dedicated to offering experiences of significance, personal connection, and transformative potential to our audience through the power and beauty of the art of dance.  Established in Toronto, Canada in 1990 and incorporated in 1996, Peggy Baker Dance Projects is a charitable non-profit organization led by one of Canada’s foremost modern dancers – Peggy Baker. Distinguished from the outset by collaborations with extraordinary creators and performers, the company has built an exceptional body of work and a growing slate of education, engagement, and enrichment programs. Peggy Baker Dance Projects began as a vehicle for solo dance expression; the company’s work now encompasses solo and ensemble dance repertoire, performed to both live and electro-acoustic music, and features a company of outstanding dancers.

Job Description

An opportunity for a passionate self-starter looking for a position with autonomy and a broad scope of activities that combine creativity and analytical thinking, the Manager of Communications and Development with Volcano Theatre and Peggy Baker Dance Projects is assigned primary responsibility in a number of areas in both companies.  These include:

- fundraising planning, campaign management, and donor stewardship;

Reporting to the Artistic Directors (Ross Manson, Peggy Baker) and the Producer for both companies (Meredith Potter), the Manager of Communications and Development works closely with the administrative and seasonal production teams to achieve project goals and to ensure that deadlines are met.

Major Responsibilities:

• Design and execute marketing campaigns to enhance the performance experience for audiences, and to increase sales.

• Devise and implement annual fundraising plans approved by staff and boards, including major gifts, annual giving, corporate donations and sponsorships, special events, and donor stewardship.

• Provide ongoing guidance and expertise to the Arts Management Intern.

• Manage special projects as directed by the Producer and Artistic Directors as necessary.

• Administrative duties as required.

We are looking for a highly creative, organized, reliable, result-oriented, flexible, and disciplined person. Our organizations are both relatively small – as a result, the Manager of Development and Communications has a close proximity and wide access to the art we make, the artists who make it, and the planning processes around the work.

• 2+ years of relevant marketing and development experience (experience specific to the performing arts industry is an asset).

• An ability to analyze and understand data trends using Google Analytics to improve sales forecasting and budget projections.

• High proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, Powerpoint), Adobe Photoshop and iMovie, and a solid understanding of HTML is required. Ability to use Mac operating system is essential.

• The ability to stay focused while multi-tasking is crucial: this position requires a wide variety of work with different constituents, and projects targeting many different audiences, often on overlapping timelines.
