We at Broken Soil Theatre have noticed a lack of opportunities in Hamilton and the surrounding area for young emerging playwrights and creators to develop their work in a supported, focused environment.
With our inaugural Playwrights Unit, we wish to offer a space for Hamilton-area emerging artists to experiment, to try and fail, to be bold and take their work to new territory in a safe and supportive setting.
The Unit will meet a few times each month and give space for each playwright to test new material and get feedback and dramaturgical support. Each participant will take an early or mid-process project and, over the course of the year, carry it into a workable full draft. The structure of these meetings will shift to meet the needs of the invited playwrights.
The year will conclude with a series of staged readings, open to the public, for each playwright to gauge how their piece works for an audience.
While we welcome submissions from all Hamilton and surrounding area writers, we are particularly eager to hear from new, unfamiliar, and underrepresented emerging voices. While our interest is in supporting text-based work, we hope to see work that subverts traditional structure and form, that pushes the boundaries of a 'well-made play'. What kind of play have you never seen in Hamilton before? We want to see that play!
Whether your stuff has been produced before, or you're writing your first play ever, we want to hear from you.
To be considered for the Broken Soil Playwrights Unit, please prepare the following:
1. Letter of Intent (Max. 2 Pages) - Who the hell are you? What's your connection to Hamilton's theatre scene? What is your project and what stage is it at? Why is a Playwrights Unit beneficial to developing your piece? What are your goals for the project? Help us get to know YOU through this letter. If we read of a bunch of letters that are all business and no personality, we might cry a bit.
2. CV or Bio.
3. A writing sample (Max. 10 Pages) - This should be from the project you wish to develop, if available... But if not, whatevz. Just let us know it's from something else.
Submit all of this in a single PDF file to firstname.lastname@example.org for consideration. The document should be titled as 'FirstnameLastnameUnit2017.pdf'.
Deadline to submit is December 1st, 2016. We thank everyone for their interest, but only successful applicants will be further contacted.
