Project Description:

What Now? is a musical about the feelings of disillusionment many millennials experience as they navigate the transition to adulthood. Regardless of their chosen career path, people ages 18-35 are almost unanimously struggling to obtain full time work, a committed relationship, and financial stability - the hallmarks of being an adult. With an increasingly uncertain job market, unsustainable housing prices, mountains of student debt, and more young adults than ever before diagnosed with mental illnesses, how do young people navigate the transition to adulthood? And with larger issues like an impending climate crisis and increasing numbers of sexual assaults occurring on a global scale, how do they persevere when finding their own path can feel so insignificant?

What Now? takes a closer look at a generation that has been constantly criticized and labelled, breaking down stereotypes by examining the triumphs and challenges of their everyday lives. The story follows four characters whose paths intersect in unexpected ways as they navigate roommates, day jobs, online dating, public transit, and mental illness. Their sarcastic, often dark sense of humour helps them cope with increasing challenges, and they tell their own stories not only through music, but also through their texts and social media accounts, which will be projected onstage, allowing the audience to observe how technology seems to simultaneously connect and disconnect them.

This position is currently part of an unpaid collaborative creative project, with the potential of receiving funding at a later date. Additional information and song samples are available upon request. Submission deadline is January 31, 2021.
