June 30 2pm - 4pm EST ONLINE

Legacy Voice is an embodied vocal practice that emerged from The Arrivals Legacy Project, the brainchild of Artistic Director and Cultural Animator Diane Roberts. It was incubated at Compagnie Danse Nyata Nyata and developed in collaboration with the faculty of The Moving Voice Institute (formerly the National Voice Intensive) while in residency as a core faculty member the past four years. This conversation is the first in a series that draws on African, Afrisporic and Indigenous ways of knowing and its relationship to contemporary creative practice.

Legacy Voice in Conversation with Choreographer and philosopher Zab Maboungou, will explore the origins and practice of the Rhythm Posture and Alignment for African Dance (Rypada) system: known to some of you as the “LOKETO” practice. We will look at dance as the first language and explore the philosophy and methodology of loketo both as a life science and as a creative process.

We will begin an interrogation of:

  • gesture as song and song as gesture; the interrelation between sounding the voice and body
  • how the stories in our bodies shape our relationships in space
  • what the Rypada system can teach us about the times in which we are living

You will have opportunity to break out into smaller groups facilitated by APL, NNDC, and MVI alumni and guests to discuss what legacy voice means to you.

Please register by 10 am EST Tuesday June 30th so we can send the Zoom invite via email to all prior to the gathering. We encourage you to join the Zoom call in the ten minutes prior so you can chat with others and we can start on time.
