In this memoir-focused workshop, Sara Porter leads participants through a lively series of movement improvisations, writing prompts and vocal explorations to generate different kinds of memoir material geared toward performance. Questions surrounding memory, identity, storytelling, performance and craft are explored through creative work and conversation. A thoughtful and fun approach to memoir. Artistic experience - in any discipline - is helpful but not required.
Recent developments in Memoir & Movement
Last winter, just before lockdown, I travelled to Winnipeg to lead Memoir & Movement training for the contemporary circus performers of Femmes du Feu. The heat of July saw the Summer Basement Sessions, a great (online) group including participants from across the country, and as far afield as Peru. In August, I studied (online) with Soul-0 Theatre, learning different perspectives in theatre-based approaches to memoir performance. Sara Porter is a choreographer and performer celebrated for her daring imagination and sense of humour. Creator of over 25 works since 1990, Sara toured coast to coast in Canada and in US with her popular, memoir-based, one-woman show Sara does a Solo. Recipient of a Chalmers Arts Fellowship to develop her distinctive work in Memoir & Movement, Sara's current solo - “Getting to Know Your Fruit” - will emerge on film in 2021. www.saraporter.ca
