Audition for Fuschia Boston’s String of Pearls (dir. Max Ackerman) at the 2025 Toronto Fringe Festival.

String of Pearls is a powerful exploration of how a shift of power influences the lives of a theatre company shaping both their artistic journeys and their personal relationships. Through a series of poignant and interwoven vignettes, String of Pearls illuminates the ways in which memories influence the choices we make, and shape the identities and destinies of those who posses them.

Please note that payment for this production will be allocated through a profit sharing model.

Themes:

Echoes Experiences influencing behaviour (Character’s thoughts and(or) actions inform the actors in the theatre company’s current choices)

-The building represents: Black Experience. How the shift in power has no attachment or regard to the roots of the building. Erasure/trying to move away from the origins. “There is a definite anti-white feeling in this country, and that can’t be allowed.”

-Choices (two races, two minorities, right and wrong, artistic responsibility and financial gains)

Lights (light being the guide, light helping us see clearly, light exposing or lack of light hiding)

Being watched (performing, recording, power in watching)

Character breakdowns:

Please note that actors will play more than one character (as reflected in the sides).

RICHARD (Male, Caucasian, able to play 40s–50s)

Artistic Director. Charismatic, commanding, and enigmatic.

Richard is the driving force behind the theater’s creative vision—charming, authoritative, and often emotionally elusive. He inspires conflict between the actors through his pursuit of financial gains over artistic responsibility. Seeking an actor with strong presence, emotional nuance, and the ability to balance warmth with underlying manipulation.

SAUL (Male, Caucasian, able to play 20s-30s)

Actor. Ingenuous, energetic, and colourful.

Saul is a free spirit who provides an optimistic angle to the direction of the theatre. He accepts his roles and responsibilities without question which at times, results in tension between him and his boyfriend Jed. Casting an actor with the ability to play both male and female characters.

JED (Male, Black/Mixed Black, able to play 20s–30s)

Actor. Restless, passionate, determined.

Jed is still finding his voice in the company and grapples with where his responsibilities lay as a black queer actor. Looking for an actor with raw energy, a sense of curiosity, and the ability to evolve emotionally over the course of the story. Must have a strong sense of character and the ability to both differentiate and connect the multiple characters on his track.
