With granting support from Guild Festival Theatre, Scarborough-based actor, producer, and writer Kay Wong is developing a new play, The K-Pop Play, as part of a project to make more accessible theatre in Scarborough. This project has two phases: workshops with Scarborough youth to determine what stories are important to them and what barriers they face in accessing theatre; and the creation of a first draft of the play, to be presented at a staged reading.
About The K-Pop Play
“In the lonely wasteland of a quiet airport, an ordinary older woman finds an abandoned phone and resolves to return it to its rightful owner. What she doesn’t know is that it belongs to the world’s hottest K-Pop idol, and his millions of adoring fans now think she’s the thief. She must embark on a frantic, globe-spanning chase to return it to him and clear her name before his most fanatical stans catch her first. Filled with song, dance, and comedy, The K-Pop Play explores the world of international superstardom and the communities of millions that make it possible.”
I am seeking a creative and experienced Playwrighting Mentor to assist me in writing my first play. They should be a steadying presence who will nonetheless be unafraid to offer honest feedback and if possible, their own insights and lived experiences to aid in the creation process.
Meetings will be a hybrid of virtual and in-person within Scarborough.
Duties and Responsibilities
In conjunction with Playwright Kay Wong, the Playwrighting Mentor will be tasked with:
- Introducing writing activities and strategies to bring a play to the page
- Discuss feedback from youth workshop participants
- Reviewing and editing drafts
- Attend rehearsals and readings, and making notes and suggestions based on actor participation
Skills and Experience
- Experience writing full-length plays for wide range of audiences
- Experience in theatre education and/or mentorship
- Excellent communication skills and ability to provide detailed notes and constructive criticism
- Strong time management and schedule flexibility
Additional Assets and “Nice to Haves”
- You have a connection to Scarborough (e.g. lived, worked, or studied in the community for an extended period)
- Knowledge of K-Pop and the culture and history of popular music
- Knowledge of the Korean diaspora and/or East Asian mass media
- Experience with working with BIPOC and marginalized communities
- Experience with incorporating accessibility measures into your work
Submission Instructions
Applications should include your connection to Scarborough in the body of your email (if any), your resume, and a brief cover letter outlining your approach to play creation.
