CALL FOR SET DESIGNER & BUILDER

A Christmas Carol

Adapted by Jacqueline Goldfinger

Based on the Novella by Charles Dickens

December 13th – 21st, 2025

King Theatre Company is looking for a Set Designer & Builder for our production of A Christmas Carol directed by Chloë Rose Flowers.

Synopsis

As Ebenezer Scrooge is visited by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future, he embarks on a powerful journey of redemption that will warm even the coldest of hearts. This swift adaptation of the Christmas classic remains true to the original story by incorporating portions of Dickens’ novella not usually seen on the stage or screen. Infused with a myriad of popular Christmas carols and a subtle twist of contemporary humour, the morality tale of Ebenezer Scrooge is once again alive with holiday spirit.

The Set Designer & Builder will be responsible for designing, creating, and constructing a versatile set for A Christmas Carol at Schomberg Community Hall. This is a movement-based, ensemble-driven production with a ten-person cast, staged in an intimate thrust or in-the-round configuration. The goal is to transform the open community space into a richly imaginative environment through simple, adaptable design, a few key scenic pieces, effective masking, and evocative set dressing. We’re looking for a designer who can bring creative vision and practical ingenuity to a tight budget.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the creative team by attending virtual production meetings beginning September 2025.
  • Design and construct a simple, effective set and set dressing that supports actor movement, quick transitions, and audience immersion.
  • Use creative masking, drapery, and scenic elements to help transform the open community hall into an intimate black box-style theatre, establishing clear playing spaces while maintaining flexibility and flow.
  • Source materials and build a few key larger set pieces (such as a rolling bed) that are functional, safe, and on wheels for smooth transitions.
  • Ensure that all set pieces are structurally sound, safely constructed, and easy to move or reconfigure as needed.
  • Possess the carpentry skills necessary to build efficiently, accurately, and with attention to safety and durability.
  • Be willing to find inventive, practical solutions that work within the parameters of a tight budget, sourcing affordable materials and using available resources creatively.
  • Facilitate set load-in in collaboration with the producer, and assist with setting up and finalizing the space during technical rehearsals.
  • Attend select in-person rehearsals in King Township to support design integration, build, and installation.
  • Work closely with the director to ensure the design is functional, cohesive, and sparks the audience’s imagination within the production’s aesthetic and logistical needs.

Production Details:

  • Virtual production meetings beginning September 2025.
  • Rehearsals November 17th – December 8th, 2025 in Nobleton, Ontario.
