With granting support from Guild Festival Theatre, Scarborough-based actor, producer, and writer Kay Wong is developing a new play, The K-Pop Play, as part of a project to make more accessible theatre in Scarborough. The first step aims to organize workshops and discussion circles with a range of local youth (ranging widely in their levels of experience with theatre and K-Pop) to determine:
- What stories are important to them
- Their experience of living and accessing art in Scarborough
- Ideas on how to overcome barriers they might face in doing so
- Their experiences with building community, both in-person and online
- Their experience, if any, with K-Pop and modern fan culture
Youth participants will receive an honorarium, food, and a chance to directly influence the art in their community through their feedback. These workshops will also be a learning opportunity for youth, incorporating exercises for acting and storytelling.
I am seeking a creative, passionate, and flexible Workshop Facilitator to co-lead these discussions through exercises that will get participants moving (not just a discussion circle!) and excited to share their honest thoughts, and to offer them hands-on experience with acting and storytelling. Workshops will be held in-person at a community location in Scarborough (exact venue TBD).
Duties and Responsibilities
In conjunction with Coordinator Kay Wong, the Workshop Facilitator will be tasked with:
- Attending planning meetings, outlining “lesson plans” and activities, and listing all required materials (e.g. flip charts, pens/pencils)
- Leading two workshops and guiding discussions for groups of 15-20 youth
- Collecting feedback from participants
- Submitting a summary report of the experience and suggestions for improvements in future iterations
Skills and Experience
- Experience with working with a wide range of youth (ages 12 to 30)
- Experience in theatre and storytelling education
- Ability to engage groups and moderate discussions
- Excellent communication and leadership skills
- Ability to collaborate to plan workshop activities
Additional Assets and “Nice to Haves”
- You have a connection to Scarborough (e.g. lived, worked, or studied in the community for an extended period)
- Knowledge of K-Pop and fan culture
- Experience with working with BIPOC and marginalized communities
- You are a youth or emerging artist/facilitator
Submission Instructions
Applications should include your connection to Scarborough in the body of your email (if any), your resume, and a brief cover letter outlining your facilitation style and how you would structure these workshops. Please send these materials in one PDF to Kay Wong, at kaywongbusiness@gmail.com with the subject line “Workshop Facilitator Application – FULL NAME”, for example:

If you prefer, you may send a link to a short video (under 2 minutes) instead of a cover letter. All applicants will receive a response no later than Friday, April 18. Early submissions are strongly encouraged and will receive priority. Those contacted for interviews will be seen virtually on Saturday, April 19 and Sunday, April 20.
If you have any questions or require any accommodations prior to submitting, please reach out to Kay at kaywongbusiness@gmail.com with the subject line “Workshop Facilitator Question”.
About The K-Pop Play
In the lonely wasteland of a quiet airport, an ordinary older woman finds an abandoned phone and resolves to return it to its rightful owner. What she doesn’t know is that it belongs to the world’s hottest K-Pop idol, and his millions of adoring fans now think she’s the thief. She must embark on a frantic, globe-spanning chase to return it to him and clear her name before his most fanatical stans catch her first. Filled with song, dance, and comedy, The K-Pop Play explores the world of international superstardom and the communities of millions that make it possible.
