About
The Hart House Theatre Classical Theatre Slam in partnership with Shakespeare BASH’d is a part of our continuing initiative to engage emerging actors, and U of T students, in a showcase event. This exciting performance opportunity will provide students and emerging artists with a chance to share their passion for performance while competing for awards and prizes. We are thrilled to once again have Shakespeare Bash’d co-artistic directors Julia Nish-Lapidus and James Wallis return to judge this year’s competition, alongside Shakespeare in the Ruff‘s Jeff Yung.
Classical Theatre Slam Submission Guidelines
Content Deadline: Monday, April 21, 2025 at 11:59 pm
You must complete the Classical Theatre Slam Submission Form and upload your submission video audition there.
All emerging performers are allowed to submit, U of T students are strongly encouraged.
You are allowed to perform any monologue or piece of classical text from a play, written before 1900 or an adaptation based on classical text. For this Slam, we encourage you to make adaptations of pre-existing text in any way you can think of, such as changing genders or contexts, to broaden the scope of what traditional classical text can look like.
Length is 2 minutes minimum to 5 minutes maximum.
Original or established works are accepted.
If you submit a monologue performed in a language other than English, please provide an English translation of the text for our Judges.
There is a limit of one submission per participant.
Please note we reserve the right to use the submission content in part or whole.
Please record in landscape format and submit as an mp4 file. If you are recording on a virtual platform like Zoom or MS Teams, please hide non-video participants (if any).
A panel of judges will choose a short-list of auditionees to advance to the in-person round where prizes will be awarded. The Live Performance will take place on Wednesday, May 14, from 7:30 – 9:00 pm at the Hart House Theatre
Please note, you must be available to perform live in order to be considered for awards, with the exception of the Award of Merit.
Performers participating in the live event will receive a gift card and the panel of judges will choose the top three performances of the night.
There will also be an Award of Merit chosen by the judges from the remaining submissions not selected for the live performance opportunity.
All prizes will be issued in the form of a $25 gift card. Winners will get to choose from the following list of options: Indigo, Uber, Second Cup Dollarama.
In addition to performing at Hart House, the winner of the 2025 Classical Theatre Slam will receive a free hour-long coaching session courtesy of Shakespeare BASH’d.
A piece will be disqualified from receiving any awards if any person has been paid for working on any aspect of the production. It will be up to the discretion of the U of T Spotlight Team to decide if a submission has had an unfair advantage.
