Casting statement:
We are looking for a wide-range of actors to play women of various ages, from various time periods, of various ethnicities. Actors of all ages (18+) are encouraged to apply, with actors over 40 especially encouraged. Some characters have set ethnicities and ages due to their story line, but others are open as indicated below. Ages listed are playing age. The casting of “women’s” roles includes both cis and trans women. Additionally, if male or NB actors are comfortable presenting as a woman in our show, please feel welcome to submit. ALL body types are welcome in the Apothecary.
Character breakdown:
- TILLY (era: 1970s) Woman, any age, Caucasian, Vocal type: Mezzo-Soprano/Belter (think Stevie Nicks) (soloist)
Apprentice to Lady and the Apothecary. Stubborn, passionate, and on a difficult journey to learn to carry burden.
- PENNY (era: 1960s) Woman, age 20-25, African American, Vocal type: High Alto (soloist)
Southern housewife, newly pregnant. She sees all the women of the Apothecary.
- ALINA (era: 1890s) Woman, age 20-50, written as Eastern European but open to any immigrant to North America
An immigrant arriving by boat to North America who has contracted an eye infection that will result in her immediate deportation.
- GISELE (era: 1940’s) Woman, age 20-30, North or South American, Vocal type: Mezzo-Soprano (soloist)
Struggling with mental illness, she is betrayed by her doctor during ECT therapies.
- MARIE ANNE (era: 1830s) Woman, age 20, any ethnicity
Struggling with an unidentified illness (Endometriosis), Marie Anne grapples with how to become a perfect woman in order to heal.
- FRANCES (era: 1810s) Woman, age 20-50, Caucasian, Vocal type: Alto (soloist)
In love with her childhood best friend (Grace), Frances finds freedom in hiding.
- HENRIETTA (era: pre-1800s) Woman, any age, any ethnicity
After losing a finger to garden shears, she makes an unlikely friend in healing. (It’s a leech)
- ELEANOR (era: 1820s) Woman, age 15-25, Caucasian
In an abusive relationship, Eleanor seeks a quiet revenge.
- MAN (era: 1820s) Man, age 30-50, Caucasian
The first man to enter the Apothecary.
(For the role of “Man” an actor/musician is strongly desired)
Additional Information:
Auditions will be held Feb 24th, 2025 10am-6pm, with callbacks on March 2nd, 2025, time TBD.
Actors will prepare 1 scene from the show (sent upon invitation to audition) and 1 song of your choice. Actors are encouraged to accompany themselves on any instrument if possible.
Rehearsal and performance dates: Rehearsals will take place various days between June 12th and June 29th, with a 1-day tech rehearsal (date TBD) between June 25th-July 2nd, 2025. Performances (7) will take place July 2nd-13th at Theatre Passe Muraille as part of the Toronto Fringe Festival, in association with the Alliance for Canadian Musicals.
Compensation: We will be working under CAEA’s Festival Policy and payment will be profit-share. A minimum of $300 per person is expected.
About the show: Creators of the award-winning Canadian dramedy musical, “Every Silver Lining”, Laura Piccinin and Allison Wither present a new musical exploring women’s experiences in medicine from time immemorial. “Apothecary” tells the story of a magical and timeless sanctuary for all women in need, no matter when they’re from.
