Culture and Canadian Sovereignty

Canada is at a crossroads. In a world of political unrest, climate crises, and shifting global powers, sovereignty can no longer be defined by armies or trade deals alone. What truly holds a nation together—what makes it sovereign—is culture.

The Royal Canadian Academy of Arts is pleased to welcome Dr. Zainub Verjee CM, a visionary artist, policy-maker, and public intellectual, to this special event as Canada is choosing a new leadership. She brings vision, urgency, and a clear voice to the question of how we, as a people, can move forward with culture as our cornerstone.

Her opening statement will set the stage for a moderated conversation amongst participants which we hope will expose converging views and a path forward.

To launch the conversation with the audience, a panel of rapporteurs including Mary Ann Barkhouse (ON), Julie Bruneau (QC), Jenn Law (ON), Charlotte Panaccio-Letendre (QC) and David Peters (NS) will follow Zainub with reactions and questions.

The special online event is curated and moderated by Luc Courchesne, RCA.
