What is sleeping. Workshop Audition Call
theatre potluck (Keshia Palm + collaborators Robin Luckwaldt and Olivia Wheeler) is looking for actor-musicians for a 2-week development workshop of a new play August 11-24 2025 (TBC) in Toronto. Artist fees reflect the CAEA ITA 25-26 fee scale.
ABOUT THE PLAY
What is sleeping. is a play written by Robin Luckwaldt about queer women in rural communities in the 1920s. It’s written for the outdoors, and woven together by music, place memory, object magic, food magic, and double-casting. It challenges the function of time in intergenerational healing and trauma, and spans three places in time that influence one another throughout the play: 1919, 2019, and now.
WE’RE LOOKING FOR
Folks who can play any one of these roles or who bring any combination of these skills as a collaborator — if YOU are interested and excited to play the genders below we are excited to see you. All roles involve singing; we welcome folks with choral experience, musical theatre, or any singing tradition (non professional is also welcome). No vocal ranges have been locked. At this point we are only considering adult collaborators.
This is not a musical — it’s a play with music / outdoor concert / the world is shaped by music. If you haven’t done a musical before, that’s totally cool. We are looking for joyful collaborators and welcome all musicianship experiences.
WOMAN 20-30 plays fiddle/violin AND harmonica
WOMAN (+ gender-questioning) 20-30 plays stand up bass OR cello, AND compact drum
WOMAN (GIRL) brings the spirit of a 9-year old. Plays penny-whistle OR recorder
WOMAN 40-60 plays piano AND compact drum
WORKSHOP ACCESS CONSIDERATIONS
We will be working 6-7 hour days, 5 out of 7 days a week. Start and end times can be adjusted to accommodate caregiving needs.
Because of the nature of the workshop, we will not have blanket masking protocols for the entire workshop process, but all collaborators will be testing for COVID daily. Where possible, we will increase ventilation, spend time outside, and incorporate HEPA filters into rehearsal spaces. The workshop will involve navigating spaces that are not accessible to folks using mobility devices.
SUBMISSION PROCESS + AUDITIONS
We’re inviting anyone who is interested to submit a link to their self tape (4 MIN MAX) and upload their resumé via google form by 11:59 PM MARCH 13. In person auditions will be held on MARCH 29 where folks will be offered a short scene to read and get to jam with us in the room.
WHAT TO INCLUDE IN YOUR SELF TAPE
- Name / pronouns, and the instruments you can play confidently for an audience
- 1 minute playing your main instrument
- 1 minute performing monologue or poem (doesn’t need to be memorized)
- 1 minute singing any song that your voice feels good in (doesn’t need to be memorized)
All tapes should be UNDER 4 MINUTES and include some form of performing / interpreting text, singing, and playing your instrument! We get it if your song is a little more than a minute and your monologue is a little less etc — as long as the tape is under 4 minutes.
