CALL FOR YOUTH PERFORMER SUBMISSIONS

A Christmas Carol

Adapted by Jacqueline Goldfinger

Based on the Novella by Charles Dickens

Directed by Chloë Rose Flowers

SUBMISSIONS DUE JUNE 17TH, 2025

Auditions in Weeks to Follow

King Theatre Company is casting a girl between the ages of 9-14 to join our ensemble of professional adult performers for our production of A Christmas Carol.

Show Synopsis

Join us for a moving, magical retelling of A Christmas Carol that celebrates the spirit of the season and the transformative power of community, compassion, and joy. When Ebenezer Scrooge is visited by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future, he embarks on a powerful journey of redemption that promises to warm even the coldest of hearts. This swift 90-minute adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic tale draws directly from the original novella to offer audiences a fresh yet timeless take on the beloved story. Infused with popular Christmas carols and a subtle thread of contemporary humour, this ensemble-driven production breathes new life into the tale’s enduring message.

An ensemble of ten will bring dozens of characters to life with creativity, versatility, and theatrical flair. Performed in an intimate black-box style setting at Schomberg Community Hall, the space will be transformed into an in-the-round or thrust stage, putting audiences right at the heart of the action.

Character & Track Breakdown

This adaptation of A Christmas Carol is, at its heart, a true ensemble piece. We are seeking talented, versatile, and collaborative performers who thrive in a team-driven creative environment.

We are looking for a performer who is hardworking, creative, responsible, and positive. This is a fast-paced, imaginative show that calls for artists who enjoy working collaboratively to bring multiple characters and moments to life in inventive, theatrical ways.

ROLE AVAILABLE: CHILD 2

The production features ten ensemble tracks, including two children’s tracks. The role of CHILD 1 has already been cast. We are casting one additional girl (aged 9-14) to play the role of CHILD 2. The track will play a variety of ensemble roles including: Caroler, Wilkens’ Daughter, Young Scrooge, Martha, Want, and Turkey Boy. We’re looking for a hardworking, responsible, and creative performer who enjoys fast-paced, imaginative storytelling and thrives in a collaborative environment.

Role Requirements

  • Female performer
  • Any ethnicity
  • Age: 9-14 as of date of submission
  • Height Approximatley: 4’11”-5’3”
  • The ability to perform in a British accent
  • Some prior on-stage experience is expected. This opportunity is not suitable as a first-time performance experience.

IS THIS RIGHT FOR YOUR CHILD?

This is a paid production that is primarily engaging adult performers. As such, children are expected to maintain a sense of professionalism that may not otherwise be expected of them in an after-school or educational theatre program. This includes focusing, listening, and showing up to rehearsal punctually, prepared, and ready to actively participate.

Your child should have previous experience rehearsing for a production and performing for a live audience on stage. We don’t expect your child to have worked professionally before, but this is not the right opportunity to try theatre for the first time. For that, we recommend checking out the educational branch of KTC.

Children will be given the script months in advance to work on memorizing their lines. At King Theatre Company, we work on a fast timeline and expect all our performers to arrive on the first day with most of their lines memorized in advance.

Ask yourself:

  • Has my child previously performed in a live stage production?
  • Is my child confident performing in front of a live audience?
  • Is my child respectful and focused in a group setting?
  • Does my child take direction well?
  • Can my child balance school with a production schedule?
  • Does my child want to do this?

If you answered yes to all of the above, we encourage you to submit!

PARENTS/GUARDIANS: YOUR ROLE

Parents/Guardians are responsible for:

  • Arranging transportation to/from all rehearsals and shows
  • Ensuring your child arrives for their rehearsal and performance call times punctually. Lateness is not accepted in a paid theatre environment.
  • Ensuring your child is line-memorized before rehearsals begin
  • Making sure your child arrives on time, prepared, and with everything they need (water, snacks, homework, script)
  • Acting as a point of communication between your child, the Sage Manager, and KTC via email
  • Coordinating with your child’s school for any missed class time
  • Being a strong emotional support for your child throughout the process

OUR COMMITMENT TO YOU

King Theatre Company is committed to maintaining a safe, supported experience for our young performers.

All adult company members and artists working on this production are required to submit a clear Vulnerable Sector Check before the first rehearsal.

A Child Chaperone will be joining our two youth performers throughout rehearsals, breaks, and backstage at performances.

Besides ensuring that your child always has a responsible adult by their side, the child chaperone is there in the room to support the two children working on this show artistically, emotionally, and educationally. They will follow the children through rehearsals, help them take notes where needed, and be there as a support system backstage.

The Child Chaperone will work with the Stage Manager to ensure that the children are taking appropriate breaks, which may be separate from the adult company.

They will also be there as a support to make sure that children are doing their homework and are there to help them as a tutor.
