Deanne Kearney is a dance writer, researcher and critic. She is currently a Ph.D. Candidate in
Dance Studies at York University. Her research follows themes of performance, politics and new media. Deanne’s Master’s research focused on the rise of the Canadian krump community. Deanne has been afforded many great writing opportunities from Dance Magazine, The Dance Current Magazine, Dance International and Mooney on Theatre. She now reviews all things dance for her website, The Dance Debrief (DanceDebrief.ca) (paused through her time as a jury member). Her full writing portfolio can be found at DeanneKearney.com.
Deanne Kearney is on the editorial board of Riffs Journal (RiffsJournal.org) and is the international secretary for PoP Moves (An International Research Group for Popular Dance and Performance – PoPMoves.com). Kearney has interned with the internationally acclaimed Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, where she worked within the dance archives. She has completed The National Ballet of Canada’s Emerging Dance Critics programme and an editorial internship with The Dance Current Magazine.
Deanne is also a long-time dance teacher and performer. She is a graduate of the BFA dance program at York University. She is also an alumnus and teacher of the Toronto B-Girl Movement. She has taught for many dance studios and programs across Canada. She has also produced hip-hop theatre shows through her company BreakinGround within the Toronto Fringe Festival, NextStage Festival and FreshBlood showcase.
