John returns to Dora Jury duty continuing his lifelong commitment to theatre. After a short career teaching ”Theatre Arts” and English, he worked in Toronto’s “alternate theatre” scene as it was then called, eventually teaming up with Leonard McHardy on Youth Theatre and other projects. Soon they opened TheatreBooks, a store devoted exclusively to books on all aspects of theatre and dance, later adding opera and film. Debuting in the 1974-75 season, TheatreBooks ran until 2014. The store quickly became a focal point for students, academics, working actors, directors, designers -all theatre folks as wells as theatregoers from across Canada and beyond. It was great to be part of the development of theatre in the country and to witness the success of so many of our customers in all aspects of the industry. The Doras exist to recognize excellence in our theatre talent and to highlight those achievements to the public. John is very happy to play a part in this important work.
