Tom Carson is the current Executive Director of Smile Theatre, a unique Toronto-based company, that since 1972 has been dedicated to enriching the lives of seniors in care through innovative theatre projects. Tom has been working in theatre for over twenty-five years as a director, producer/administrator, teacher and writer. His productions have touched audiences in theatres, schools, churches, synagogues, seniors’ centres and community spaces from Vancouver to Charlottetown. He has received nominations for awards, including three times for “Outstanding Production – Theatre for Young Audiences” at the Dora Awards. Tom has a special interest in creating for, and working with, vulnerable people who are often marginalized. This focus has led him to projects with adults with special needs, children of all abilities, pre-schoolers, and seniors with dementia. He is most interested in theatre that is truly accessible, and that finds ways to reach beyond perceived limitations.
