For the first time ever this year, the Dora Awards are being audio-described. TAPA is working with Superior Description for the Dora award show ceremony. Listening devices are available at the Koerner Hall box office. The 43rd Annual Dora Mavor Moore Award are a great opportunity to experience audio description. We encourage our audience to try it out and tune in for 30 minutes, 60 minutes or as long as you like, and return the  headphones at any point during the show.

The Dora Awards will provide on-stage ASL interpretation and live Audio Description services. To book an Audio Description device in advance, please contact Dora Manager Scott Dermody at scottd@tapa.ca

Accessible features of the building

The TELUS Centre for Performance and Learning has been designed to be accessible to people accompanied by small children and people with disabilities.

Entrances
Two of the building’s three entrances are accessible by people using mobility devices (example – a wheelchair, scooter, or walker) and strollers:

  • the Bloor Street entrance on the west side of the building (Tim and Frances Price Wing)
  • the Philosopher’s Walk entrance on the east side of the building

Elevators
Two elevators provide convenient access to all areas of the building.

The south passenger elevator is accessed from the orchestra lobby or student lounge and can take patrons to the lower or upper levels of the Leslie & Anna Dan Gallerias. Alternatively, the west passenger elevator is located by the box office, and between the concourse (C) level and level 5.

Signage will be posted in the event that one of the elevators is unavailable and patrons will be directed to use the second functioning elevator.

Washrooms
The main public washroom is fully accessible and located on the ground level, opposite from b espresso bar. Other washrooms are located on the concourse, level 2, 3, 4, and 5. (These washrooms do not have an access button; however, please ask our staff to assist you in opening the door.) In addition to standard hand dryers and paper towel dispenses, there are always additional paper towels available on the sink counter. Please contact security if supplies need to be replenished.

The Weston Family Box Office
A low ticket counter makes it easier for persons who use mobility devices (example – a wheelchair, scooter, or walker) to communicate with our customer service agents and view brochures.

Performance Spaces

Koerner Hall
The patron seating can accommodate 9 persons seated in wheelchairs or using other mobility devices (scooters, walkers). In Koerner Hall accessible seating locations, patrons can remain in their mobility device or transfer to theater seats. Patrons who cannot, or do not wish to transfer to a theatre seat, should request accessible seat locations when ordering tickets.

Folding arm rests are available in orchestra level row A and B both aisle seats and Lower Balcony, Row E both aisle seats.

Accessible Features at Events

Quiet Room in Koerner Hall
A quiet room in Koerner Hall, separated from the audience, for people with sensory considerations, those on the autism spectrum, ADD/ADHD, or a learning disability is available to patrons upon request. Concerts are watched through a glass window, with controllable volume. Please contact the box office for more information and availability.

Support person ticket discounts
A discount is extended to any support person whose assistance is required in order for the patron to attend an event. The cost for a Support Person ticket is always half the price of a regular ticket and is subject to all fees. This discount applies to Royal Conservatory presented concerts, and select independent presentations. Please inquire at the box office for more information, pricing and availability.

Assistive listening devices
Listening devices are available on loan, with no charge, for any Koerner Hall presentation. To request an assistive listening device, please email our box office or ask one of our ushers upon arrival.

Mobility Assistive Devices
Royal Conservatory ushers will check mobility assistive devices at the back of the theatre, when patrons reach their seats and will return them upon request, or during breaks in the performance and at end the performance.

Courtesy wheelchairs
For patrons who require assistance travelling within the building, (please note: for those patrons with mobility limitations, it is a fair walking distance from the box office to your seat), we offer wheelchairs on loan which are subject to availability. Patrons who know in advance that they would like to reserve a wheelchair for their concert-going visit can either email or call the box office, prior to the event. When you arrive, please come to the box office and our staff will be happy to bring a wheelchair to you and provide entrance to seat service, when requested. Because of liability issues, Royal Conservatory staff can not accompany patrons outside of the building.

Service animals
Accredited service Animals are welcome; please advise the box office when ordering your tickets to ensure a suitable seat is reserved.

Food and Beverage
For barrier free food and beverage service, Royal Conservatory food and beverage personnel will make an effort to approach persons using mobility devices to place their orders.  Please let our staff know if assistance is required.

We encourage a scent free environment at the TELUS Centre for Performance and Learning.
