Lost Dreams Collective is now casting for our upcoming Staged Reading of Long Live the Fury, a play in development, written and directed by Will King.
SHOW INFO:
Long Live the Fury is a full-length play that connects us to a small town hockey team. It contains a large ensemble of characters illustrating the far reach of the team and its deep value in the community. The show intentionally tackles thorny subject matter, and strives to create something that accurately reflects the lived experience of athletes, and the passion of hockey fans, while tackling the hard issues of sport. Who belongs here? Why do we love this sport? And what do we sacrifice for a winning culture?
ROLES:
There are over 35 specific characters in the play, and multiple storylines, so these are the current actor demographics we are looking for:
The Players: Hockey players (a lot of them! Male presenting, and one athlete in gender transition, ages 20-40).
The Staff: General managers, coaches, coordinators, and an intern (male and female presenting, ages 20-60).
The Town: Fans, family, media, and locals (a variety of roles and identities, ages 20-50).
We highly encourage members of equity-priority groups, including LGBTQIA+, BIPOC, Latinx, and Asian artists.
While the majority of roles in this play are male, and hockey is historically a predominantly White sport, there are over 35 characters in the play, and many roles have been written specifically for members of particular social and cultural groups, such as: a South Asian immigrant father introducing his son to hockey, a male-presenting star player in the early stages of gender transition, a Black player facing insidious racial discrimination, and a group of hockey women discussing the fallout of sexual assault. We are also very interested in working with artists who have experience inside hockey culture, or with competitive sports.
YOU CAN PLAY:
$5 from each ticket for the reading will also go towards You Can Play; an organization that seeks to challenge the culture of locker rooms and spectator areas by developing a culture of respect. The You Can Play Project works to ensure the safety and inclusion for all who participate in sports, including LGBTQ+ athletes, coaches and fans.
TIME COMMITMENT:
Selected actors will rehearse four times for four hours in early December in Toronto. The process will culminate in a staged reading performance Friday Dec 18 at The Vault Creation Lab.
COMPANY INFO:
Lost Dreams Collective is a Toronto-based independent theatre collective run by Will King dedicated to creating Canadian contemporary work and presenting classical text in a new light. We aim to develop and produce plays that reflect the narrative of our lives.
Our last production, Dead Broke, was a dark-comedy horror hybrid that premiered at the Toronto Fringe in 2022 to rave reviews! We were selected by the Toronto Star as a “Top Pick!” of the festival, and received “NNNN” from Glenn Sumi (formerly at NOW magazine) who described the show as “terrific theatre, full of committed, fresh performances.” It was consequently remounted at The Theatre Centre for a successful run in Oct 2024.
SUBMISSION INFO:
Actors are asked to submit a copy of their headshot and resume along with a short message of interest with the subject line “LLTF Actor Submission” to lostdreamscollective.ldc@gmail.com. Submissions are due by Friday Nov 13 at midnight. Early submissions are encouraged. Selected applicants will be sent script sides and information to complete a selftape.
Artists who have previously worked with Will King on a show through Lost Dreams Collective or Seven Siblings Theatre are asked to simply submit a quick note of interest for consideration.
ADDITIONAL NOTES:
This play is fun!
Actors will play multiple roles for this process and reading. Due to the volume of characters, selected candidates will be sent sides from the script that may differ from the role offered in casting.
Ideal candidates will have some experience with new plays, interest in hockey culture, and will be excited about working in a collaborative environment, but anyone is welcome to submit!
This show will be produced as a formal profit share under the CAEA Artists Collective Policy agreement. All remaining profit from the performance day will be shared equally among participants. Union and non-union members are welcome to apply.
