King Theatre Company now seeking three talented performers to star in our upcoming production of Yasmina Reza’s ‘ART’. Translated by Christopher Hampton, directed by Chloë Rose Flowers.
Submissions Due January 31st, 2025. Auditions in Weeks to Follow.
Synopsis
When Serge, a passionate art enthusiast, spends a fortune on a minimalist white-on-white painting, his purchase sets off a heated debate among three longtime friends. Marc, the pragmatist, derides the painting as pretentious nonsense, while Yvan, the indecisive peacemaker, struggles to keep the peace. As their arguments intensify, the conflict shifts from the painting itself to deeper insecurities and the fragile bonds of their friendship.
Art is a witty, incisive exploration of the nature of art, the subjectivity of taste, and the complexities of human relationships. With razor-sharp humour, Yasmina Reza’s Tony and Olivier award-winning play invites audiences to laugh, reflect, and question the true meaning of friendship.

Character Breakdown
SERGE (he/him, any ethnicity, playing age 30s – 50s)
A successful professional and art aficionado. Serge is confident, intellectual, and deeply invested in his purchase of a minimalist painting, which he sees as a symbol of sophistication. He values cultural refinement and is sensitive to criticism, especially from his closest friends. Looking for a performer who can embody Serge’s intellectual passion, occasional arrogance, and vulnerability when challenged. Must have strong comedic timing.
MARC (he/him, any ethnicity, playing age 30s – 50s)
The sceptical realist of the trio. Marc is opinionated, forthright, and unapologetically critical of Serge’s taste in art. Beneath his blunt demeanour lies a deep loyalty to his friends, though his cynicism often puts him at odds with them. Seeking a performer who can balance Marc’s biting humour and cynicism with moments of genuine care and frustration.
YVAN (he/him, any ethnicity, Playing age 30s- 50s)
The mediator caught between Serge and Marc. Yvan is well-meaning but indecisive, often fumbling as he tries to diffuse the tension. His personal anxieties, particularly about his upcoming wedding, add layers of humour and relatability to his character. Looking for an actor with excellent comedic timing.
