Aaron Rothermund started their journey as a member of the youth program at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre. They activated large-scale outdoor puppet shows with Clay & Paper, and initiated forum theatre for youth shelters with Mixed Company. Aaron wrote and directed a play for the Toronto Pride Festival, and two plays for the Toronto Fringe Festival. Aaron directed Dave Carley’s play, ’Into’ at the Berkeley Street Theatre, and Tennessee Williams’ play, ‘And Tell Sad Stories of the Deaths of Queens’ in seven non-traditional spaces across the GTA. As the artistic producer of Video Cabaret, Aaron created the Deanne Taylor New Works Festival seeding nine emerging companies, and the Michael Hollingsworth Writing Circle to fund eleven new writers. Aaron developed Vox Pop Cabaret to explore the creative process with female and trans artists, and the Black Box Sessions which takes classical texts such as Shaw, Chekhov, and Shakespeare to form a larger-than-life theatrical workshop with Video Cabaret designers, actors, and directors. Aaron’s first full season as artistic leader brought a world premiere production in association with Crow’s Theatre, ‘(Everyone I Love Has) A Terrible Fate (Befall Them)’ written and performed by Cliff Cardinal with direction and dramaturgy by Karin Randoja, ran for five sold-out weeks and was nominated for five Dora Awards. Aaron coproduced ‘Quartet’ with Other Hearts Collective, which was nominated at the Dora Awards for set design. Aaron also co-produced the world premiere of ‘Mad Madge’ by Rose Napoli with Nightwood Theatre, which won a Dora for costumes.
