Jean Yoon is a theatre artist, actor and playwright. She began her career in the 1980’s with Upstage Theatre, Canasian Artists Group and Toronto Free Theatre’s Dream in the Park – before there was a permanent stage in the park but after TFT was no longer free and before TFT was absorbed into Canstage. In the 1990s, she worked intensively in the indie theatre scene, primarily as a cultural equity advocate for Theatre Ontario, and as a new play development producer & dramaturg. She was Co-AD of Cahoots Theatre Projects, reviving the company into a vital creative hub for diverse artists, boosting a whole new generation of playwrights of colour. Her own works for the stage include the multimedia performance art comedy The Yoko Ono Project (TPM/Loud Mouth Asian Babes) and Hongbu & Nolbu: the Tale of the Magic Pumpkins (YPT). As an actor she’s worked widely on stage and screen but is best known as Mrs. Kim in the stageplay and CBC series Kim’s Convenience, earning a Canadian Screen Award, ACTRA Award and ACTRA Award of Excellence. Upcoming appearances include The Horror of Dolores Roach (PrimeVideo) and Jeff Chan’s Sci-fi feature film Code 8: Part II (Netflix).
