Born and raised in Ottawa, Michael Torontow been a professional actor, director and writer for over 25 years.
After earning a degree in Theatre and Arts Administration from the University of Ottawa and participating in the community musical theatre scene, Michael moved to Toronto, took a shot at an open call for Mamma Mia!, and landed a spot on the show’s US National Tour. Two years later, he found himself back in Toronto starring as Link Larkin in the original Canadian company of Hairspray. Since then, his work has been seen on stages large and small in Canada from coast to coast, in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina and Japan.
Some of his favourite roles include Jamie in The Last 5 Years, Giuseppe in The Light in the Piazza, Sam in Mamma Mia!, Homer in Floyd Collins, Kevin T in Come From Away, and Sweeney in Sweeney Todd, which earned him a Dora nomination for Outstanding Performance in a Leading Role.
While most of his career has been spent on stage, Michael has spent considerable time “on the other side of the table” as an arts administrator and director. Most notably, his ten-actor production of Into the Woods earned seven Dora Award nominations, including Outstanding Production and Outstanding Direction.
Michael lives in Dundas, Ontario, with his husband, Matej, their dog, Nili, and their many feathered and finned friends.
